The village of Alpe di Siusi comprises the localities Saltiria, Compaccio, Giogo and Piz Giogo as well as a series of mountain huts spread all over the highland.
Covering an area of about 6,000 hectares, the Alpe di Siusi is Europe’s largest high-altitude alpine pasture. As part of the Sciliar-Catinaccio nature park, this area is characterised by wide alpine pastures, a wide variety of flowers and little larch forests. In the course of the decades several small settlements were established that are, however, mainly tourism-oriented.
Compaccio at the west end of the high-altitude pasture is the largest settelment. This is where several station of the Alpe di Siusi funicular, the Bullaccia lift and other lifts are located. Also a modern church and several accommodation can be found in this locality, which is considered to be the entrance to the high-alpine protected area. Even if the recent activities in the building line were critisized both by inhabitants and guests, the implementation of the funiculars was needed in order to keep the area of Alpe di Siusi a vehicle-free zone.
In the east end of the Alpe di Siusi highland, there is the village of Saltiria. This little dispersed settlement is located along the headwaters of the Rio Saltaria, emptying into the Rio Gardena close to the village of S. Cristina, and is a popular starting point for hikes in the Dolomites, such as to the Sassolungo, Sassopiatto, Molignon and Sciliar mountains. Some of the mountain huts and accommodations also lie at the Piz, so to speak on the slopes of the homonymous mountain. At the very top, there is the mountain station of the Ortisei - Alpe di Siusi funicular.
